Colors of Mexico
escrito por umair khan

By Amanda Martin

Why is it that you rarely see houses painted with such positive, fun, vivid colors as these? Wouldn’t you just burst out laughing if you came home to a hot pink house everyday? I think it might make me smile. (Of course the neighbors might hate you, but do you really care?)

Only in Mexico are they not afraid of using such vibrant paint. Typically reserved for beachy areas, I have seen many a house in Mexico City with similar color palette.

Some think it contributes “eye sores” to the city, but I think it brings a bit of life to what can easily be a drab urban landscape in shades of grey. And it just might spark a bit of creativity and joy in those who pass by on their way to or from their daily activities.

Interesting note: the Spanish word for “hot pink” is rosa mexicana, referring to the “Mexican” version of the color pink!

Amanda has lived and worked in Mexico City for over 2 years. She is an independent qualitative researcher, marketer, writer, trend-watcher and creater of inspiring ideas. Mexico is her addiction - the culture, language, food, craziness and passion make it all worth the traffic, pollution, and lack of urban planning. You might see her running on the streets of Condesa with a Golden Retreiver named Nena.
