Introduction
In order to offer a newer and better option in telecommunications to the Mexican market, and in accordance to the government decision to open to competition this sector, Avantel was created in October of 1994 as an independent Mexican company, part of a joint venture between Grupo Financiero Banamex (a Citigroup company) and MCI, the telecom leader in North America.

In early August of 1996, Avantel finalized the deployment of its long distance network and completed the first long distance call in Mexico under an open competition environment. Since then, Avantel has changed the way people communicate in this country, by introducing a service oriented culture for a market that has learned to demand higher quality standards and newer communications options..
