The National Museum of Art was founded in 1982 and re-opened its doors in 2000 as the MUNAL after an intense remodelation process and a technological actualization. Museography also changed to match the best galleries in the world.
One of its main objectives is to study, exhibit and spread Mexican and international art made between the XVI century and the first half of the XX, providing new experiences for the comprehension and esthetic joy of its collections and public exhibits.
The Museums has over 3,000 works of art and an exhibit floor of near 50,000 sq ft. It is an independent entity form the National Institute for Fine Arts and inside its facilities they develop conservation, exhibition and diffusion programs around the Mexican plastic art.
The Museum also offers public programs to contribute with educative and cultural objectives of their own through workshops and publications among others.
There are 3 permanent collections in exhibition: 1550 – 1821 captures the development of the Colonial Art in Novo Spain, 1810 – 1910 Independence and Romanticism, and 1910 – 1955 from the Mexican Revolution and the period known as Nationalism.
