A space dedicated to the memory of Diego Rivera and the study an analysis of his artistic generation in Mexico. Inside the Estudio, Diego painted most of his easel work (more than 3,000 paintings) and projected the murals he was going to paint in what is considered the 2nd part of his artistic life. Meanwhile and after painting over 100 works of art, Frida consolidated herself as an artist.

Museum Casa Diego Rivera

The architectural design of the Casa Estudio was made by Diego and Frida’s friend, Juan O’gorman, who design and built it in 1931. Nevertheless it was opened until December 1986. It was built in a functionalist style, architectural concept that led the construction to be declared artistic monument on March 25, 1998. It displays paintings, drawings, documents, books, personal objects and pictures capturing the atmosphere of life and work of the artist.

The museum has a long heritage in Mexico. Diego Rivera is one of Mexico's most important art expositors worldwide. While in Europe, Rivera took up cubism and had exhibitions in Paris and Madrid in 1913; he then had a show in New York City in 1916. In 1921 he returned to Mexico, where he undertook government-sponsored murals that reflected his communist politics in historical context.

He married Frida Kahlo in 1929, and their tempestuous marriage got to be as famous as their art. In the 1930s and 40s Rivera worked in the United States and Mexico, and many of his paintings drew controversy. His 1933 mural for the RCA Building at Rockefeller Center in Manhattan featured a portrait of Communist Party leader Vladimir Lenin, the resulting uproar led to his dismissal and to the murals official destruction in 1934. Besides Casa Diego Rivera in Coyoacan, Mexico, Riveras work can also be found in other museums and public buildings such as the El Palacio Nacional and the building that hosts the Ministry of Education, Mexico City and Chapingos University. Rivera reflects Mexicos national essence and spirit like few in Mexican history.

.

During the last 24 years the Museum has hosted more than 250 temporary expositions, many of them traveled to countries such as the US, Spain, New Zealand, Central and South America. 70 books have been published showing Diego and Frida’s life and work. Workshops, guided tours are available.
