Aguascalientes – meaning ‘hot waters’ in Spanish – was so named for its famous hot springs. But in addition to its waters, the city is a prosperous industrial city with a beautiful colonial city center.
A curiosity of the city is the pre-Hispanic catacombs that form a labyrinth beneath its streets and gave rise to the name used by the Spanish, La Ciudad Perforada, meaning the perforated or drilled city. Aguascalientes was first established as a garrison to protect the silver convoys from Zacatecas to Mexico City, and the hot springs eventually started to be employed for agriculture. These days the production of the area has diversified into industry, especially car production. The city now enjoys a range of modern facilities, including a recently built neo-colonial bullring. |
