Bacalar Real Estate

Laguna Bacalar, the "lake of the seven colors", is the second largest fresh water lake in Mexico and is about 35 miles long from north to south. Unpolluted and pristine (hopefully it will receive the protection it needs to stay that way), it is an amazingly beautiful lake.

The colors can change hourly depending on the wind, the clouds, the weather, the day and the time of day. From green, to white, to the Caribbean blues, you can often count all 7 colors. Sometimes, it seems, there are more. It is fed by underground streams and springs, has many different depths (from under a foot to several hundred feet in the cenotes) and multiple bottoms (sand, rock, mush, mussel beds, reeds, limestone formations). Rich with mangroves, birds and wild-life, the shores also host small hotels and lakeside homes.

Although the Pueblo of Bacalar has been declared a Pueblo Magico and tourism is being encouraged, the town still has a small town feel to it. Considered part of the Costa Maya, close to Belize and many spectacular Mayan ruins, Bacalar is a lovely spot to enjoy for its own beauty as well as a jumping off place for day trips.

Real estate and investment-wise, Bacalar is just now starting to be discovered and is ripe for "getting in on the ground floor" type of investment. All signs point to the growth of tourism and associated investment in the area. Development is trending towards small-medium sized, upscale lakeside resorts and nature-oriented tourist activities (sailing, watersports, wildlife viewing and lake tours, jungle canopy ziplines, etc). Land prices are still a fraction of those in the northern areas of Quintana Roo state where development is more advanced.
