ImageCampeche’s history as a colony, a historically wealthy city and a target for pirates give it a wealth of buildings, museums and curiosities to visit. Just strolling around the city, day or night, will keep you happy for hours as you appreciate the forts and colonial architecture that pepper the city.

The Mansion Carvajal

The Mansion, formerly home to the Carvajal family has Arabic arcs and a flight of steps made of marble. It has been converted into a crafts store and offices of the government.
Address: Calle 10 between Calle 51 and 53.

The Cathedral of the Conception

Some old examples of Colonial architecture can be observed here at the Cathedral, which was completed in 1705. Latecomers to church on Sundays can be seen huddling outside the doors and the building is incredibly beautiful when lit at night-time.
Address: Parque Principal

Other attractions include the Church of San Francisco, built in the XVI century, and the San Francisco de Paulo Toro Park, which houses a theater of the same name. The Regional Museum is known as the Casa del Teniente del Rey (House of the Lieutenant of the King) and has a collection of European weapons from the XII to XIX centuries.

The Historical Hall of the Fortifications is a fascinating place based on historical explanations, and reconstruction of fortifications of the old walled city with photomountings in color and scale models.

Details of these and more can be found at the Tourist Offices – one on Calle 57 opposite the Parque principal and another call55 at Calle 8, just west of the Cathedral.
