Health and Hospitals in Cancun

Health Hospitals CancunWith over nine million visitors per year, the Yucatan Peninsula is responsible for the majority of foreign tourism to Mexico. Tourists come for the beautiful weather, white sand beaches, exotic coral reefs, Mayan ruins and miles and miles of excellent five-star hotels. Unfortunately, in Cancun the lack of a large, established local community did not make the building of adequate health-care facilites economically feasible until very recently. Cancun has also lacked responsible medical leadership and, as a result, a pattern of corruption has pervaded.

Hospitals in Cancun

Hospital AmeriMed-Cancun
Avenida Tulum 260
Plaza las Americas
Col. Centro
Tel. (998) 881-3400
Fax. (998) 881-3466

Located adjacent to Plaza de las Americas shopping center, AmeriMed Hospital was co-founded by an emergency medicine doctor from the United States, Mark Engleman, and is just one of three hospital/clinics he initiated. The other two facilities are located in Cabo San Lucas and Puerto Vallarta.

The surroundings should make any North American feel very comfortable. Dr. Engelman's objective was to build and administer a network of hospitals in Mexico's favorite tourist destinations with North American standards of care. To his credit, his hopsitals are neat, clean, and staffed with licensed, board-certified physicians who all speak English. The hospital in Cancun was started with grand ambitions, but due to the recent drops in international tourism, it has lacked funding for diagnostic equipment.

It is our understanding that AmeriMed does not partake in hotel, ambulance, or doctor payouts in exchange for patient referrals. This has also served to limit their patient flow. As a result, the hospital's main draw is a credentialed staff and a well-equipped and well-run emergency ward. Due to a lack of diagnostic equipment, we can only recommend a visit to AmeriMed for minor or moderate illnesses and conditions. It should be viewed as an urgent care center and not a full service hospital at this time.

In July of 2003, Spanish Corporation Grupo Hospiten unveiled Hospital Hospiten, Cancun - a brand new, 45-bed, full service hospital built to cater to the needs of the tourist. They have translation services available in English, Spanish, German, Portugese, French, Dutch, Italian, Japanese, and the rooms are large enough to accomodate traveling family members. Grupo Hospiten has run a chain of reputable hospitals, now totaling 13 worldwide, throughout Spain, the Canary Islands, and the Carribean.

This hospital has all of the latest in modern technology except for cardiac catheterization, cardiovascular surgery, and MRI. They require that all staff physicians be board certified. The staff is friendly and helpful, and prices for tourists are competitive. Like AmeriMed, we understand that Hospiten does not participate in hotel, ambulance, or doctor payouts in exchange for patient referrals. We recommend Hospiten for all but the most grave of medical conditions.

Living in Cancun

Cancun is blessed with endless stretches of white sand beaches kissed by turquoise waters. This is Mexico's premier vacation destination, a Caribbean extravaganza with charms to entice any visitor. Cancun has a wonderful array of accommodations at great prices.

Cancun Real Estate

In spite of Cancun's instant name recognition around the world, it is still a fledgling city. Development originally began in 1970, and two years later the resort was officially born. Home to thousands of North Americans and, increasingly, Europeans, Cancun has become the epicenter for Mexico's booming tourism industry - the seventh-largest in the world.

Retiring in Cancun

Cancun might not be the first place that springs to mind when thinking of retiring in Mexico, but this coastal resort has a lot more to offer than boisterous mega clubs and an army of U.S. springbreakers. As soon as you're out of the hotel zone everything becomes much more sedate, with low-rise buildings and larger public spaces.

Working in Cancun

Most expatriates either arrive in Mexico to work for a multinational company or with the idea of trying to find a job here. The latter has limited scope due to Mexico's fairly rigid labor laws. To get work in Mexico, a foreigner has to prove to the immigration authorities that he or she is capable of doing a job that a Mexican national isn't qualified to do.

Vacation Activities in Cancun

There are so many activities to participate in that you will find you need extra vacation days to try them all. You can swim in the warm waters of the Caribbean or in one of Cancun's many hotel pools. Water sports abound: windsurfing, parasailing, scuba diving, snorkeling, boating and fishing.
