Teaching English

Working CancunMost expatriates either arrive in Mexico to work for a multinational company or with the idea of trying to find a job here. The latter has limited scope due to Mexico's fairly rigid labor laws. To get work in Mexico, a foreigner has to prove to the immigration authorities that he or she is capable of doing a job that a Mexican national isn't qualified to do.

One of the easiest forms of legal work for a foreigner is teaching English. The immigration authorities tend to look favorably at foreigners who are applying for a work visa to give English classes, and they're accustomed to receiving hundreds of applications each year for teaching permits. It isn't perhaps the best paid job in the world, but a teacher with a full-time schedule can live fairly comfortably and afford to rent or share an apartment.

Many long-standing residents in Mexico begin their expat lives as teachers, before a better opportunity comes their way. Following their example will give you time to pick up the language, which is vital if you set your sights beyond a career in teaching.

Job Opportunities

One of the biggest headaches for any foreigner who wants to live in Mexico but is not being sent overseas by a company is how to get a job and what jobs are out there for an English-speaking native. Most times people will mention teaching, but Mexico offers a lot more opportunity than giving language classes. Cub reporters come to Mexico to gain valuable experience while other foreigners look to start up their own companies. With that in mind, SolutionsAbroad now allows you to browse our job postings free of charge. This extremely useful tool will increase your options when thinking about relocating to or prolonging your stay in Mexico.
