Finding a job in Guadalajara often depends on whom you know as well as how good your credentials are. Being bilingual is always a big bonus, especially with a knowledge of English, while other languages like French, German and Italian may also come in very handy considering the number and size of European companies doing business in Mexico.
A good start for newly arrived foreigners may be to register with their respective embassies, or relevant social clubs, thereby beginning the process of incorporating oneself into the flow of things and finding good opportunities to begin networking. Teaching EnglishMost expatriates either arrive in Mexico to work for a multinational company or with the idea of trying to find a job here. The latter has limited options due to Mexico's fairly rigid labor laws. To get work in Mexico, a foreigner has to prove to the immigration authorities that he or she is capable of doing a job that a Mexican national isn't qualified to do. One of the easiest forms of legal work for a foreigner is teaching English. The immigration authorities tend to look favorably at foreigners who are applying for a work visa to give English classes, and they're accustomed to receiving hundreds of applications each year for teaching permits. It isn't perhaps the best paid job in the world, but a teacher with a full-time schedule can live fairly comfortably and afford to rent or share an apartment. Many long-standing residents in Mexico begin their expat lives as teachers, before a better opportunity comes their way. Following their example will give you time to pick up the language, which is vital if you set your sights beyond a career in teaching. To be recognized as a qualified English teacher, most language schools will require that you hold an ESL certificate. This can be obtained in a four-week intensive course. The ITTO school in Guadalajara is a highly-regarded language school that offers this certification. On completion of the course, they also guarantee employment and will process your work papers. Another well-known school in Guadalajara, the Berlitz Institute, also offers the same program and services.
