Going Out in Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo

 Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo both have lots of markets, outdoor pursuits and nightlife to keep visitors engaged.
Fishing: Trips can be arranged through several different companies. Prices will vary depending on boat size, the length of the trip, and how many people are going – check if they include drinks, pop, bait and fishing gear.
Scuba Diving: Although diving continues all year, the best time to dive is May to December when the water is the clearest. There are over thirty different dive sites and it’s best to get advance reservations during Christmas and Easter.
Boat Trips and Cruises: The most popular trip is to Isla Ixtapa. There you can snorkel, scuba dive, rent water sports equipment and stop for lunch at one of the restaurants. In the evenings a pleasure sailboat, the TriStar, cruises the harbor. Price includes an open bar.
Other Activities: Equipment is available for rental for parasailing, windsurfing, and waterskiing.
ShoppingThe Mercado de Artesania Turistico in Ixtapa has over 150 stands and stalls where you can find souvenirs, T-shirts and local handicrafts.
In the hotel zone you will find several little malls. Many have small boutiques and shops as well as cafés and eateries.
Inside Los Patios, you’ll find La Fuente, which sells arts, crafts, furnishings and pottery. This mall includes stores like Aca Joe, which has sportswear, Bye-Bye with it’s casual and beach clothing, and the Supermercado Scruples.
Zihuatanejo has its own Mercado de Artesania Turistico that is larger than the one in Ixtapa, with over 255 stalls and stands. Silver jewelry, masks, crafts, and ceramics are some of the items you’re likely to find here. At the municipal market, the majority of stands and stalls carry hammocks, baskets, and huaraches, a low-heeled sandal.
The Coco Canbana Collectibles has Oaxacan carvings, folk art and crafts from around the country.
The Casa Marina, a small two-story building, has several boutiques that carry handcrafted items such as silver jewelry, rugs, clothes, masks, and carvings.
Sports and ExerciseIf you like Golf, Ixtapa has two excellent courses, home of famous national and international tournaments.
Club de Golf Palma Real Ixtapa and Club de Golf La Marina charge green fees from 45 to 75 USD depending of club, time and season. Carts, caddy and equipment rental is available in both places.
"Club de Golf Palma Real Ixtapa" is an 18 holes course designed by Robert Trent-Jones Jr.; well maintained and traditional, it has a club house and restaurant.
"Club de Golf La Marina" is an 18 holes course designed by Robert Von Hagge, with a club house.
If Tennis is your thing, some hotels have their own playing fields for their guests, but these clubs also offer more than 10 courts open to the public. Day and night games, 4 to 7.50 USD per hour; previous reservation is usually required (depending on season).
Bars and NightclubsFor night owls, Ixtapa offers several lively bars and discos.
Carlos 'n Charlie's has a fun fiesta atmosphere with dancing on the beach, next to the Hotel Posada Real.
The elegant Christine Disco at the Krystal hotel is the area's most upmarket nightclub with an incredible light show.
New to Ixtapa is the Millennium Nightclub, located at Magic World.
For spectacular sunset views, try the lobby bar at the Westin Brisas or, in the new Marina Ixtapa, there’s El Faro, a sunset bar perched atop an 85-foot-high lighthouse with live music and dancing.
La Valentina is a classy extravagant club with tropical decor next to Posada Real.
Sanca Bar is a chic rustic club with live tropical music at the Hotel Barcel.
Also in Ixtapa are Sr. Frogs, Freeway Pub, and live music in the lobby of most hotels.
In Zihuatanejo head to the El De Latinos (live and disco music) or Fandango (live music for dancing). Mr. Mike’s is a hip cantina and nightclub on the hill, Puerto Mio Disco has trendy adult music.
There are also Mexican Fiesta nights at several Ixtapa hotels with buffet, handicraft bazaars and live entertainment on alternating nights of the week.
