 Xalapa or Jalapa (but always pronounced ha-LA-pa), the capital city of Veracruz, is sometimes referred to within Mexico as the Athens of Mexico. This seems to make reference to the focus on arts in the city, rather than the look of the place.
Xalapa boasts a beautiful location nestled in the mountains, with lush vegetation on all sides. In contrast to the heat of the port of Veracruz, Xalapa enjoys a fresher climate, with quite frequent drizzle. Its beautiful architecture and cobbled streets make the city one of the gems of the Mexican provinces, and make it a joy to visit the abundance of cafés that the city boasts.
It seems that Xalapa is responsible for a lot of the dishes typical to Veracruz, and there is a lot of excellent local coffee and chocolate in the region. The area is also responsible for the majority of Mexico's tobacco production, offering local cigars that can be very good.
Xalapa is located very closely to the ravines of Veracruz where rafting adventures take place, adding another dimension of its attraction to the visitor. |
