Page 2 of 7 Other Mexican Restaurants Other Mexican/home cooking restaurants to consider are: the Bellinghausen (5207-4978/6149) in the Zona Rosa, the Casa de los Cántaros (5598-8990/8894/8951/0690), at the World Trade Center, the Casa Bell (5208-3967/4290), behind the Citibank building in the Reforma Centro area. These three previous restaurants are good, relatively informal restaurants that belong to the same family. They are reliable and they are all set in pleasant surroundings. Izote (5280-1671), situated on Masarik 513, is a chic new addition to the Mexican restaurant scene. The owner and head chef is none other than Patricia Quintana, one of Mexico's most famous cookbook writers. Izote offers traditional Mexican dishes but in a revolutionary new style making this one of the most popular restaurants around town. Make sure you make a reservation. More traditional, in the Historic Center is El Cardenal (5521-8815), and the Caballo Bayo (5589-3000/1384), literally, the "bay horse", on Conscripto Avenue, in the West of the city. That place on the weekend is a riot, with Mariachi music and everyone getting sauced on tequila. El Cardenal has just opened a location at the northeastern edge of Lomas de Chapultepec on Palmas Ave (2623.0401). which is getting rave reviews and one in the Sheraton Alameda-Centro Histórico (5518-6632). In Polanco there is Los Remedios Polanco (5255-2090) and the Villa María (5203-0306), while Tecamachalco has the traditional Tecamacharlie's (5293-0224/0366), which is part of the chain that has the Señor Frogs and Carlos & Charlie's restaurants in Cancun, Acapulco, Puerto Vallarta, etc. Another excellent choice would be the Fonda El Refugio (5525-8128, 5207-2732) in the Zona Rosa, which has been around for more than four decades. Finally, taquerías, or places where you get tacos. They are EVERYWHERE. If you’ve got a hankering for tacos (and who doesn’t?) your best bet is to find the El Fogoncito (Polanco location: 5531-6497) franchise restaurant nearest you. They have handy locations and their quality is consistent.
