Page 4 of 7 Bistros and Italian CuisineLike in all major cities in the West, Mexico City has seen a proliferation of these types of restaurants. Bistro du Vin (5258-0340) in Bosques de las Lomas is actually surprisingly good with an excellent selection of wines, like the name suggests. Il Punto (5280-3623) has become trendy in the Polanco district, where you can also find La Bottiglia (5280-8481, 5280-0609) Prego (5281-0203, 5281-2637). In the Roma/Condesa area of town, Ligaya (5286-6268/6380), La Vendetta (5286-0806, 5553-3324) and Rojo Bistro (5211-3834) both offer very good food at good prices with the chef's personal attention, In Lomas de Chapultepec there's an airy, light Italian eatery called Sofía (5202-8598/8470). For more upscale Italian dining, try Alfredo Di Roma (5327-7700, x. 3421) situated in the Hotel Presidente Intercontinental. The specialty is the Pasta Alfredo, made with a rich parmesan sauce, and it also offers a very good selection of wines. Cafe La Gloria (5211-4180/85) - Years before La Condesa became a backyard for hip restaurants and bars, this small restaurant set the tone for what was to come in the future. Purchased by a famous Mexican artist, Cafe La Gloria serves a mix of continental cuisine stretching from Italy to the orient. Add the fact you can sit outside while enjoying your food makes for an extremely pleasing dining experience. The service is attentive (although the waitresses tend to resemble art students), and each month new art exhibits adorn the restaurant's walls which you can also purchase. Recommended dish: chicken curry with a rasin sauce.
Non Solo Pasta (5545-4111) - Italian food! Don't you just love it! Although everybody seems to adore food from our Roman friends, it’s quite hard to find a restaurant that actually cooks it well for a modest price. Cue Non Solo Pasta (not just pasta). This small restaurant in Polanco does an excellent job of producing quality Italian dishes for reasonable prices. The owner might come across as a little eccentric (take a look at the restaurant's business card to see why) but he definitely knows his pasta from his spaghetti. Being half Italian on his father side would explain the authentic taste to the cuisine. Bistro Charlotte (5250-4180) - This quaint restaurant in Polanco is a dab hand at producing European home-style cooking, especially if you're looking for the British or French variety. Small and decidedly cosy, Bistro Charlotte also excels at holiday meals, so if slaving away in the kitchen for that Thanksgiving meal is driving you up the wall, simply give them a call y voila! On certain days you can treat yourself to a fantastic rhubarb crumble, so it comes as no surprise then they're conveniently situated opposite the British Council. Return to top
