Safety Concerns and the Metro

Mexico City MetroBe aware that, as in other subway systems in the world, Mexico City has a few stations that have been known to be problematic. A report issued by the Metropolitan Police Department (SSPDF) indicates that a handful of stations are considered somewhat unsafe. Their concern is an increase in crime trends and the unlawful trade of drugs, locally known as narcomenudeo, or the sale of very small quantities of drugs. Take extra caution when entering or exiting these stations:

Salto del Agua Chapultepec San Lazaro
La Raza  Cuatro Caminos

If you enter these stations, most likely nothing will happen to you. Relax, mind your own business and beware of your surroundings and possessions. Proceed to your destination point at the earliest opportunity. There is police presence, and authorities try to do what they can to provide you with necessary protection.

Furthermore, if you decide to ride the metro as a foreign visitor instead of other means of transportation, enjoy the trip by preventing crime. How? By not flashing expensive jewelry or carrying credit cards or large sums of cash.
