Teaching English

Working MonterreyMost expatriates either arrive in Mexico to work for a multinational company or with the idea of trying to find a job here. The latter has limited opportunities due to Mexico's fairly rigid labor laws. To get work in Mexico, a foreigner has to prove to the immigration authorities that he or she is capable of doing a job that a Mexican national isn't qualified to do.

One of the easiest forms of legal work for a foreigner is teaching English. The immigration authorities tend to look favorably at foreigners who are applying for a work visa to give English classes, and they're accustomed to receiving hundreds of applications each year for teaching permits. It isn't perhaps the best paid job in the world, but a teacher with a full-time schedule can live fairly comfortably and afford to rent or share an apartment.

Many long-standing residents in Mexico begin their expat lives as teachers, before a better opportunity comes their way. Following their example will give you time to pick up the language, which is vital if you set your sights beyond a career in teaching.

Job Opportunities

One of the biggest headaches for any foreigner who wants to live in Mexico but is not being sent overseas by a company is how to get a job and what jobs are out there for an English-speaking native.

Most times people will mention teaching but Mexico offers a lot more opportunity than giving language classes. Cub reporters come to Mexico to gain valuable experience, while other foreigners look to start up their own companies.
