Health in Oaxaca

Print E-mail

ImageBy North American standards, the health system in Oaxaca is technologically limited. There are sufficient services for the routine treatment of mild to moderate complaints but not emergency services for severe illness.

We recommend Clínica Hospital Carmen for those in need of non-emergency medical attention who don’t speak much Spanish. The institution is owned by a family of 12 surgeons, physicians and dentists and has several English-speaking personnel.

Hospital Reforma was created through the renovation of an old Spanish mansion and doesn’t strike you as a medical facility when you step into the courtyard. It is by far the most pleasant and tranquil of all the hospitals in Oaxaca, but lacks English-speaking staff.

Médica 2002 is the most complete hospital in the city, and has an on-site laboratory. The downside is that it’s outside of the centre and has very few English-speaking doctors.

Dr, Horacio de Jesus Tenorio-Rodriguez is part-owner of the above-mentioned family owned Clínica Hospital Carmen and he’s a good first contact for English-speaking travelers or new arrivals.

Dr. Ramón Jiménez-Caballero speaks both English and Spanish and specializes in internal medicine and oncology.
