Pachuca, the capital city of Hidalgo, lies 90km north of Mexico City. The hills are blanketed by brightly painted houses and rise around the town to grow into the spectacular Sierra Madre Oriental.
The city grew due to the discovery of silver in 1534 and the mines of Real del Monte at 9km northeast of the city still extract large amounts of the metal.
Pachuca holds fame as the gateway for soccer, brought in by tin miners from Cornwall, England in the 19th century. Further evidence of the Cornish presence are the meat pies known as pasties (locally known as pastes) that are a popular food in the town. |
