Although Saltillo spreads over a large area, the most interesting sites are in the blocks around the city’s two central plazas.
Catedral de Santiago: Santiago Cathedral is to be found on the main plaza, and features exquisite decoration that looks best when illuminated at night.
Alameda Zaragoza: The Alameda is a pleasant park boasting an abundance of shady trees and pathways.
Palacio de Gobierno: The Government Palace is situated on the plaza with Santiago Cathedral. Inside, you can see fine examples of Mexican murals depicting Coahuila's history and heroic figures.
Instituto Coahuilense de Cultura: Local and international exhibits of painting, sculpture, and crafts are held in this gallery, which is open from 09:00 hrs to 18:00 hrs, from Tuesday to Sunday (free of charge).
Seasonal Events: The Anniversary of Saltillo is a cultural festival held to commemorate the city's foundation, and takes place over nine days in late July. It’s followed by the annual fair.
For the Day of Santo Cristo de la Capilla celebration, dance groups from Coahuila honor the city's patron saint. The date refers to the arrival of a statue of Christ brought over from Spain in 1608, which remains in the Capilla del Santo Cristo within the cathedral.
ShoppingThere are a wide range of shops in Saltillo, with everything form quirky local shops to multi-national malls and super-stores.
El Sarape de Saltillo, on Hidalgo, sells fine quality sarapes, rugs, ponchos and tablecloths.
Mercado Juárez, next to Plaza Acuña, is also worth a look and has a selection of sarapes as well as hats, saddles and souvenirs.
