Of the two Cabos, San José is the more sedate. Among activities available there is horseback riding across the sandy beaches, golf and shopping in an authentic Mexican atmosphere.
This last point is key: San José was populated by working-class Mexicans who service the hospitality industry and it was not meant to be a resort town.
Today, however, San José has plenty of good restaurants (Morgan’s, La Dolce, El Chilar, Don Emilianos, Tropicana, etc.) and one good thing about the town is that it is centered around a traditional “Zócalo”, or central square, with its cathedral and Victorian gazebo.
ShoppingMany stores in San Jose del Cabo are housed in old colonial buildings. Readily available handicrafts include pewter goods, Mexican ceramics, woven rugs and wood furniture.
There are quite a few options for shopping in San Jose del Cabo.
The Mercado Municipal has an assortment of fresh meat produce, and fish, as well as every day items.
At Copal, you can find a selection of Oaxacan carved animals, wood furnishings and masks from Guerrero as well as silver jewelry.
An interior design shop, ADD or Arte, Diseno y Decoracion, has hand painted dishes from Guanajuato, Talvera ceramics and wood furnishings from Michoacan.
