One of Mexico's most beautiful towns, San Miguel incorporates all the charm of traditional México along with all the comfort of modern Mexico, while also offering the vibrancy of its prodigious art life and colonial architecture. With an expatriate population of 5,000 out of a total population 80,000, San Miguel is a veritable haven for retirees. Expatriates are mainly from the U.S., but San Miguel also offers famous art schools such as the Allende Institute and the Bellas Artes, which draw many younger people from Mexico and abroad every year. When you add the local element with their traditional ways of life and their festivals (such as the San Miguel Day and Procession, the Pamplonada, etc.), restaurants, cantinas and attire, along with the wealth of churches and colonial and baroque architecture, San Miguel projects an eclectic and dynamic beauty that is rare - even in Mexico.
Living in San Miguel can prove to be quite a good bargain. A 2,500 square-foot home could cost 150,000 dollars, and there are old colonial-era houses and even haciendas that can be converted into a dream home. Prices are generally very cheap on staple foods, utilities don't cost too much either, and property tax comes to a measly 130 dollars a year. One concern of retirees in particular is medical services, yet San Miguel offers the state-of-the-art Hospital de la Fé, on the Libramiento a Dolores Hidalgo. It's considered an excellent hospital. In terms of shopping, San Miguel's marketplace is perfect for crafts, home utilities and staple foods, but for those who miss the big department stores, you'll also find Costco, Sam's and a Super Walmart. There is even an excellent library featuring one of the largest collection of English-language books in Mexico. Return to top |
