Tepic, the capital of the small state of Nayarit, is a hive of activity on the shores of the Pacific. The name Tepic comes from the word in Nahuatl meaning 'Palace of Solid Rock'. It is close to the border of Jalisco, and the resorts Nuevo Vallarta and Puerto Vallarta. Despite its proximity, local time is one hour behind Puerto Vallarta and the rest of the state of Jalisco.
The colorful indigenous Huichols, whose culture was the topic for Carlos Castaneda's famous books, are often found in Tepic, where they visit from their homes in the mountains in order to sell their very unique and beautiful arts and crafts.
Tepic is well connected to Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara, as well as a variety of great beaches in the state of Nayarit. |
