Tlaxcala Zocalo:
The center of Tlaxcala is very attractive and has a huge variety of buildings. The Palacio Municpal is a former grain warehouse, whilst the Palacio de Gobierno is decorated with extensive murals that depict Tlaxcala's history.
The Palacio de Justicia used to be a meeting house for indigenous nobels, and features some unusual architectural features, including the seal of the House of Austria.
Ex-Convento Franciscano de la Asuncion:
This convent was one of Mexico's earliest, built between 1537 and 1540. Its ceiling is unusual because the design is Moorish. Below the monastery (off the steep, shaded path), is the bullring and the Moorish theme is continued alongside it in the arches of the Capilla Abierta.
Museo de la Memoria:
The recently opened museum on the corner of Plaza Xicohtencatl uses a multimedia approach to presenting Tlaxcala's history, which is novel but only in Spanish.
Santuario de la Virgen de Ocotlan:
The Sanctuary is a church that sits on a hill a kilometer north of the Zocalo, which is a great example of a Churrigueresque façade.
Tizatlan:
Xicotencatl was the rebel leader that led the Tlaxcalans against the alliance with the Spanish Conquistadores, and has since become something of a national hero in Mexico. The remains of his palace are to be found atop a small hill 4km north of the town center. Featured are two altars, with some frescos that feature pre-Hispanic gods.
Cacaxtla and Xochitecatl:
Both of these pyramids are very unique, Cacaxtla beholds some fantastic frescos, while Xochitecatl is comprised of two pyramids, one very wide, and the other circular. To get to both sites first go to Cacaxtla, which is about 10km from Tlaxcala, from there you can walk or drive the 1.5 km to Xochitecatl.
ShoppingTlaxcala can be a good place to buy arts and crafts, the place to look for these is the Pasaje de Artesanias.
