Telephone Companies - Local Telmex www.telmex.com/ used to be a state-owned monopoly. More than 90% of local connections still belong to this telecommunications giant. Nevertheless, there are other local telephone companies, notably Axtel, which has recently been launched. The phone line in your residence should already be hooked up (if it isn't you can Ask Sam how to do this). A new line costs between $1,000 and $3,500 pesos, depending on the company and the sort of service (commercial versus residential, for example) you need. Phone bills can be paid at most bank branches.
Long DistanceAvantel, Telmex, AT&T/Alestra, AT&T and others offer long distance calling. Whichever you choose, setting up is easy. Telcel, which belongs to Telmex, is the largest. Iusacel and Pegaso also offer cellular service, as does Nextel, although this last company works a little differently in that it caters mostly to businesses because of its ability to link their units as if they were wireless radios. There is also Multivision (www.mvs.com.mx/multivision), Sky (www.sky.com.mx) and DirecTV (www.directv.com.mx). These last ones are channeled via satellite.
