As the state where Miguel Hidalgo famously declared Spanish rule to be over, Guanajuato is widely accepted as the cradle of Mexican independence. Historically affluent, Guanajuato´s importance remains as the nation’s number one producer of leather goods, a major producer of textiles and as a tremendous resource of gold, silver, lead and iron. The beautiful city of Guanajuato is recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site and every year hosts the Cervantino, one of the world’s most important culture festivals.
