Queen Elizabeth II Congratulates Mexico on its Bicentenario. The message was sent to President Felipe Calderon on behalf of the country’s festivities. Great Britain was the first European country to recognize Mexico’s independence from Spain in 1825.
Her Majesty sent a personal message congratulating President Felipe Calderon and the people of México for its 200 independence celebration from Spain as a symbol of the friendship and partnership between Mexico en the UK. President Calderon recently met with the Queen in England during an Official Visit made in March, 2009.
Here is part of the message sent by the Queen: “Ever since England recognized Mexico as an independent country in 1825, our nations have enjoyed a large history of friendship and partnerships. In this most special occasion, receive my best wishes for a future filled with peace and prosperity.” The relation between Mexico and the UK has been characterized by tens of social, cultural, technological and commercial exchanges. During the 19th century, British engineers placed an important role in the construction of Mexico’s first railway, more specific in the Inter Oceanic Railway of the Istmo de Tehuantepec.
It was also the UK who introduced soccer in Mexico through a group of miners from Cornwall, England, who arrived to the town of Real del Monte, Hidalgo to work at the local mine. They also brought the pastrys, base of the actual and nation wide famous pastes de Real del Monte.
