The sister city of Zihuatanejo has the immediate region's only private medical facilities, but even these clinics have only basic care facilities. The Hospital de Especialidades in Zihuatanejo can treat mild to moderate illnesses.

Ixtapa has several colonial and modern style malls interconnected by plazas and gardens, as well as many high-rise hotels of four and five stars; most hotels are of well known international and national chains.
Ixtapa is a modern, Government-planned luxury world-class resort that was formerly a coconut plantation. Neighbouring Zihuatanejo is also quite touristy but a little more laid back, with an easy-going coastal ambience.
