Xalapa or Jalapa (but always pronounced ha-LA-pa), the capital city of Veracruz, is sometimes referred to within Mexico as the Athens of Mexico. This seems to make reference to the focus on arts in the city, rather than the look of the place.
Xalapa boasts a beautiful location nestled in the mountains, with lush vegetation on all sides. In contrast to the heat of the port of Veracruz, Xalapa enjoys a fresher climate, with quite frequent drizzle. Its beautiful architecture and cobbled streets make the city one of the gems of the Mexican provinces, and make it a joy to visit the abundance of cafés that the city boasts.
It seems that Xalapa is responsible for a lot of the dishes typical to Veracruz, and there is a lot of excellent local coffee and chocolate in the region. The area is also responsible for the majority of Mexico's tobacco production, offering local cigars that can be very good.

A visit to the Museo de Antropología de Xalapa (MAX) is a great day activity if you are traveling through central Veracruz. Xalapa has a few small clinics and hospitals and only a rare few of their staff can communicate in English, according to our partner MedToGo. Visitors with no Spanish and/ or serious complaints will struggle to get adequate treatment, and in such a case we recommend a trip to Puebla or Veracruz.
