Nogales lies on the border with the United States in the state of Sonora and is a major transit point. Compared to other border towns such as Tijuana, Ciudad Juarez and Nuevo Laredo, the city gives a better introduction to Mexico, in part due to its smaller size.
Nogales is a common entry point to Mexico for people traveling to San Carlos and Rocky Point, both very popular beach spots. The name Nogales has its roots in the previous abundance of walnut trees that flourished in the area.
The city enjoys good links to various parts of Sonora and Arizona, whilst retaining a character all of its own.
