Reynosa is situated 20km from its original site, due to earlier problems with flooding, and has been in the present location since 1802. In common with many border towns, little of historic interest or beauty has survived the passing of time, compared to other large towns in Mexico which retain a larger part of their heritage.
Nowadays Reynosa is one of northeast Mexico's most important industrial centers, featuring oil refineries, petrochemical plants, cotton mills, distilleries, and maquiladores. There are also natural gas resources, which are piped to Monterrey and into the USA.
Most of the visitors to Reynosa pass by on day-trips from Texas, for the main part to party in a more unrestrained way than at home. There is some amount of cross-border traffic, but the majority is for visitors to and from Reynosa, most travellers prefer to use one of the other crossings.
