Ten years ago, the Riviera Maya was a relatively unchartered coast of cabana-lined beach towns sandwiched between the more popular Yucatan cities of Cancun and Cozumel. In terms of medical care nowadays, the system, like the zone, is growing and in a state of transition. Doctors are moving from Cancun to set up practice and clinics are being built, but the process is still in its nascent stages and lacks organization. Local clinics are often understaffed and overpriced, and we do not recommend that you go to the clinic without contacting a doctor first.

One of the more qualified diving medicine physicians in the Mexican Caribbean, Dr. Ambriz has worked and trained extensively all over the world in countries such as Thailand, Belize, Germany, the United States, the Bahamas and Papa New Guinea, to name a few. He received his medical degree from the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico and completed training in hyperbaric medicine at Richland Memorial Hospital in South Carolina.
