San Cristobal became world famous in 1994 for the Zapatista uprising, led by Subcomandante Marcos. The immediate result was that traditional tourism stalled, and was replaced by a flood of wannabee revolutionaries.
The town is beautiful, due in large part to the surrounding villages which are composed of groups of indigenous Maya.
