San Luis Potosi is a haven for daytrippers and shoppers.
Xilitla: The town of Xilitla is poised on a mountainside overlooking the surrounding, green valleys with a spectacular view of the thumb-like mountain called La Silleta, an attraction for mountaineers and hikers.
Xilitla itself, whose municipal center is at an altitude of 675 meters above sea level, is surrounded by lush, semi-tropical forest and mountainsides. In the 16th Century Augustinian monks arrived in Xilitla, constructing the Convent of San Agustín in the town center. One of the principal attractions of the area is what is known as the Enchanted Garden of the Englishman, Edward James, at Las Pozas, just 2 kilometers outside of Xilitla.
Real de Catorce: This infamous reborn ghost town is a three-hour trip by car from San Luis Potosi, and you soon realize why people are lured here. All around are signs of former wealth and industry in a little town perched among the crags of an almost lunar landscape. The town is quickly becoming re-populated and is a favourite for people looking for an unusual retreat.
Parque Tangamanga: This park is 2km from the center, and has a planetarium, outdoor theater, aquatic amusement park, two lakes, sports fields, and a small zoo. Open 9:00-16:00 hrs, Tuesday to Sunday (free of charge).
