San Miguel offers some excellent activities, ideal for a weekend get-away from Mexico City, or indeed from any town or city in central Mexico. One cannot go to San Miguel without spending a nice relaxing afternoon at one of the thermal spas, or "balnearios." The two largest and best ones are along the road to Dolores Hidalgo, right next to each other: the "Escondido" and the "Gruta." They can even be rented out at nights for private parties.
Other than bathing, San Miguel offers some excellent museums, churches and botanical gardens. The Museo Historico de San Miguel offers interesting exhibits relating to the pre- and post-Hispanic history of San Miguel and its environs. The Parroquia de San Miguel Arcangel is the most impressive church in the city, located right on the main square. The Templo de San Francisco and the Capilla de la Tercera Orden are also worth visiting, both being located just a few minutes walk from the Parroquia. The botanical gardens (El Jardin Botanico El Charco del Ingenio) is located 1.5 kilometers from the town center and has mostly samples of local flora. The orchid gardens "El Pocito" is also a must see, located on Santo Domingo street, just a 10 minute walk uphill from the town square.
