Tampico does not have an excess of sights but boasts some impressive buildings to admire, some decent shopping and a respectable nightlife. Museo de la Cultura Huasteca: This museum in nearby Ciudad Madero features a small collection from the pre-Hispanic Huastec culture. Open Monday to Saturday and free of charge.
Playa Miramar: The 10 km long Playa Miramar is about 15 km from downtown Tampico. The beach is reasonably clean, and is a great place to enjoy some seafood and margaritas.
Xilitla: For the more adventurous, a visit to a surreal world in the middle of the rain forest of the Huastec region could be worthwhile. Las Pozas, the creation of the Englishman Sir Edward James, was the product of a mind that provoked Salvador Dali to comment, "Edward James is crazier than all the surrealists put together. They pretend, but he is the real thing."
Las Pozas (pictured) is a bizarre collection of buildings, bridges, pavilions, sculptures, and spiral stairways that finish in mid-air. The collection of swimming holes makes it a popular place at weekends.
