Retiring in Tijuana

Retiring TijuanaTijuana still smarts from its tag of being a city of disrepute, borne from the Prohibition-era when thirsty Americans would cross the border for liquor, women and gambling. However, in the last twenty years, the city has metamorphosed into a thriving hub for tech specialists and start-up telecoms companies.

It also has become a cheaper, alternative place to live for thousands of Americans who work in San Diego. According to statistics, up to five millon people cross Tijuana's border each month, making it the most busiest international border in the world. Tijuana also boasts the highest capita per income in Mexico and is regarded as having one of the best climates in the republic.

So it comes as no surprise than that the cheaper cost of living coupled with its proximity to the United States makes Tijuana a highly attractive place for U.S. retirees. Already a huge development project is in the works in the south eastern part of the city called Nuevo Tijuana.

Covering more than 37,500 acres of land, Nuevo Tijuana will offer 250,000 new residencies including 50,000 retirement homes. The complex will also include vacation homes, resorts, industrial and office parks, shopping centers, a university campus, a medical plaza, tourist attractions and a municipal airport.
