Message from the Minister of Foreign Relations, Dr. Guido Westerwelle, during the celebration of Germany’s Unification Day: These are exciting images that will be associated for ever with German unification: a country in collective ecstasies, people crying and embracing each other during the event at Brandenburg. “We are the people” shouted the crowd.
The world had the opportunity to see the energy and courage displayed by the thousands of people gathered and how the anxiety for freedom could finally overthrow the Russian dictatorship. One year later, on October the 3rd 1990 Germany was again re united.
This 20th anniversary of Germany’s Unification Day brings us the opportunity to look behind and be grateful. Grateful for the fact that German Unification process had almost no obstacles and curves, it was a straight line that rapidly led Germany to a positive change. This is something that we owe to our oriental and occidental partners. We received from them the support and sympathy needed and that we will never forget.
In Europe we have reached important goals through the years. Today 500 million Europeans from 27 countries live in freedom and peace inside a territorial space with a common set of laws. The European Community is a project of peace and reunification unique in its gender and which success cannot be denied.
Twenty years alter Unification Day our goal is to provide the tools and circumstances for a better and more peaceful world. Germany’s foreign policy is a policy of peace. Disarmament, climatic change, energy and demographic evolution are some of the most important topics that we must address in the near future. German unification has taught us that goals can be achieved even if they seem impossible at first. It only requires courage, determination and the will to take the right decisions.
