Magic Town Mexico Patzcuaro Michoacan

Imprimir E-Mail

Patzcuaro a Magic Town inside Michoacan, Mexico. Founded in 2001, the idea behind the Magic Town Secturs project is to show that Mexico is much more than just sun and beach. Converting quaint, culturally rich towns into visitor-friendly destinations, the government wants to make sure they retain their authentic Mexican charm, which is ultimately what sets them apart from other destinations and become Magic Towns.

Patzcuaro is translated as "door to heaven" or "place where the blackness begins”. Patzcuaro is a large town and municipality located in the state of Michoacan. The town was founded sometime in the 1320s, at first becoming the capital of the tarascan state and later its ceremonial center. After the Spanish took over, Vasco de Quiroga worked to make Patzcuaro the capital of the New Spain province of Michoacan, but after his death, the capital would be moved to nearby Valladolid (what we know as Morelia today).

Patzcuaro Magic Town Mexico

Volcanic activity and the state's latitude position helps create a setting not unlike Hawaii. Rich soil supports lush jungle-like vegetation, with spectacular mountain landscapes and pasturelands. The state has few large cities, but rather is a quilt of small villages and towns that have changed little since the early 1800's. Its pace is leisurely, its people friendly, and its Spanish colonial and indigenous heritage rich.

Nearby the Magic Town of Patzcuaro we find the island-town of Janitzio, which means "where it rains". It can only be reached by boats which run regularly back and forth from about 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., accessible from Patzcuao´s pier or “embarcadero”. Be sure to make it to the last boat service. You could be stock on the island until the next day and there is only 1 very small hotel and room vacancy is very scarce. These boats can also be hired to take you around other parts of the lake. The town of Patzcuaro is famous for the butterfly fishermen who are skilled at lowering their butterfly-shaped nets to catch the local famous "pescado blanco". The butterfly fishermen are located on the back side of the 50 peso Mexican banknote. Click here to learn more about Traveling in Mexico

Although its incipient period (the first two centuries B.C.) is poorly understood, archaeological data show that the next two centuries (A.D. 1-200) were characterized by monumental construction, during which Teotihuacan quickly became the largest and most populous urban center in the New World. By this time, the city already appears to have expanded to approximately 20 square km, with about 60,000 to 80,000 inhabitants.

Travel Mexico - Zacatecas Heritage of the World

Travel Mexico and travel in time. In Zacatecas nearly all of the city center buildings are nineteenth century or older; the topography and irregular street pattern (most streets are too steep and narrow for vehicles; many have steps in them) almost make one think of a medieval city like Toledo, Spain. The city, built on the site where silver was discovered in the 1530s, is crammed into a narrow canyon, with houses and churches perched on its nearly vertical walls.
